What Was Pakistan's Big Move at GITEX Global 2024?

Being the new tech hotspot, “tech in Pakistan” is now on everyone’s radar. GITEX 2024 was dishing out some serious innovation energy, and Pakistan was the go-to for Tech Destination 2024. The event spotlighted the country’s booming ICT and startup ecosystem for a global audience. And that’s not all—running alongside GITEX Dubai was the North Star Startup Show, where 10 of Pakistan’s hottest startups and incubators showed up big time. The buzz? They’re getting mad love from the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, and beyond.

Pakistan’s role in the global tech industry was huge. A total of 80 Pakistani companies and startups took part in GITEX Global 2024, with strong backing from the government, specifically through P@SHA and PSEB. A key highlight was the signing of an MoU between Jazz and MTC, aimed at enhancing cloud services and storage solutions in Pakistan. This move further solidifies Pakistan’s growing reputation as a prime destination for tech investment, showcasing its skilled talent pool and cost-effective business environment and sustainbility.

Inside The Gitex Dubai 2024! Key Highlights

“How AI is shaping the future at GITEX” is a question that has long been answered by this year’s expo. Using AI (Artificial Intelligence) to enhance people’s quality of life was the main goal of the event. It was demonstrated via autonomous retail tales and virtual police personnel. Here are some of the most significant announcements and projects made during the annual technology expo, which will conclude on October 20 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Introducing Dubai's virtual police officer

This year during GITEX, Amna, the virtual police officer for Dubai Police, was the talk of the town. Charged with AI technology, the bilingual (Arabic and English) law enforcement officer was available to answer questions from the public, assist with fine payments, or record incidents.

RTA's Intelligent Technology

At GITEX, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) unveiled a smart gate initiative that reduces cash transactions and increases operational efficiency in services by enabling passengers to pay public transportation fares using facial recognition.

Education is enhanced by EdTech.

Generative AI also found a champion in the EdTech sector with Estonia at the forefront. Kristina Kallas, Minister of Education and Research of Estonia said that the number of EdTech startups in the country had increased by 50% in the last five years, with an annual growth rate of 30-50%. The Minister further observed that AI (Artificial Intelligence) could make education more tailored and individualized, which includes helping children with learning difficulties and low language skills.

Virtual travel

Through the launch of its Metaverse and Web3 initiative, the Sharjah Archaeology Authority made the emirate’s rich heritage landscape accessible to the public. The Jabal Khatm Al Melaha Archaeological Trail, which combines artificial intelligence (AI) with virtual and augmented reality, immerses visitors in the Neolithic Era, allowing them to examine over 120 rock inscriptions. According to research firm McKinsey & Company, the potential reward of virtual travel is predicted to surpass $20 billion by 2030, driven primarily by inspirational advertising and virtual events.

Farm bots are the farming industry's future.

With its farm bots, the UAE’s Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority presented the farming of the future at GITEX. By combining AI and robotics, the bots will provide precision in agricultural planting, cultivation, and harvesting. Its sophisticated sensors keep an eye on the state of the soil and maximize the use of resources, including cutting down on chemical and water waste.

Autonomous security patrol

To improve safety in residential areas, Dubai Police introduced their self-driving security patrol. The sustainable and environmentally friendly, all-electric patrol can travel five to seven kilometers per hour and has a battery that lasts up to fifteen hours. The car can also read license plates, identify people, and detect illegal activity thanks to its artificial intelligence and smart technologies.

Careem turns green.

According to ride-hailing business Careem, since its 2020 launch, their e-bike service, Careem Bike, has eliminated approximately 2.9 million tonnes of CO2, or the equivalent of 834 automobiles releasing CO2. In contrast, 53% of Careem ride-hailing journeys in 2023 were made in electric or hybrid cars. There are currently more than 1,400 hybrid cars and more than 75 electric Teslas in Careem’s fleet in the United Arab Emirates.

Increasing cyber security

Cyber risks that jeopardize various facets of our lives and privacy are growing along with technology. The UAE Cyber Security Council (UAE CSC) and Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) partnered to create a more private and secure global information society in an effort to address cyber security issues. Both councils will launch a variety of projects, ranging from awareness-raising educational programs to cryptographic migrations and deployments. Deterrence, prevention, operational deployments, collaboration, and cyberattack response are all aspects of the UAE CSC and ATRC’s synergy.

What’s Next On The HITS?

GITEX 2024 announced plans to introduce a European version of the technology show in 2025. The Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of the emirate, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, made the announcement and provided details on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“We are pleased to announce the launch of ‘GITEX Europe 2025,’ which will debut in Berlin, Germany in May 2025,” he wrote.
The announcement comes after the brand’s GITEX Africa debut in Marrakech, Morocco, the previous year.
